Observed November 16, Dutch-American Heritage Day recognizes the contributions of Dutch Americans and commemorates the 1776 "First Salute," when the Dutch island of St. Eustatius fired a salute to the American warship Andrew Doria, the first foreign acknowledgment of U.S. independence. It was proclaimed in 1991.
