Maundy Thursday, the Thursday before Easter, commemorates Jesus Christ’s institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. The name comes from the Latin “Mandatum novum do vobis” (“a new commandment I give to you”). Known as Holy Thursday, it's also called Green Thursday or Sheer Thursday in some regions.
