The Solar New Year, or Mesha Sankranti, marks the Sun's transit into Aries (Mesha) around April 14 and begins the year in the Hindu solar calendar. It is the astronomical basis for regional new-year festivals such as Vaisakhi, Puthandu, Vishu, Pohela Boishakh, and Songkran.
